Access code for property gate: Provided in welcome email.
Access code for the unit: Provided in welcome email. Use the provided code on the keypad on the front door. If any access issues arise, please call Matt Childs at 360-519-6990 for alternate access options.
Garage Code: Provided in welcome email.
Vehicle Code: Provided in welcome email. If you’re interested in renting one of our vehicles, contact Matt for rates and availability. Rental vehicles are available for our 3 bedroom units.
Parking: If renting our vehicle, please park in the garage. For additional vehicles, there are multiple parking spaces located around the complex near the unit. A parking permit is needed when on property and is located inside the welcome booklet which is located on the counter. The permit is needed so property management knows who is parking and how to contact you in the case you need to move your car (for example if there is maintenance needed somewhere on property and access is needed).
Wifi Access: Access information is posted in multiple locations around the unit and is also in the welcome booklet.
Keys: no key is needed to access the unit as we use a keypad and have a contactless entry process. Please use the unique access code provided in your welcome email and enter on the keypad on the entry door. If the keypad fails for any reason, contact Matt Childs for alternate access instructions.
Pool: use the larger pink key to access either pool. Remember: “pink is for pool”!
Complex Entry Gate: the pink pool key is also used to open the walking gate at the front entrance.
The picture below is of the Waikoloa Beach Resort area which includes A-Bay Beach, the Hilton and Marriott hotels, Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf Course, the Queens’ and Kings’ Marketplaces and our condo complex named Waikoloa Beach Villas (right side of the map).
The second picture is of the Waikoloa Beach Villas complex. There are two pools & hot tubs and the complex is along Hole 3 of the Lakes Course of the Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf Course.

Things about the unit
Where is everything? In each room, are laminated sheets posted describing where major items are around the house.
Supplies: Each unit is stocked with your basic necessities and likely has more than you thought. When we travel, we like to feel at home which is why we’ve stocked each unit with the basics (i.e. toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash…the full bottles, not those tiny little hotel versions!). But we also have spices, tin foil, ziplock bags (various sizes), tupperware, kids cups, coffee pot with a reusable filter (so don’t buy filters), dust buster and more. Chances are we have what you’re looking for, so read the placement sheets to identify the exact location of the item in question. We also have items in various closets in the units. Feel free to open anything unlocked and take what you need (you’ll notice cleaning and supply refills in some of the closets, please leave those alone unless you are out of something…like toilet paper!…then definitely grab some more)
Quiet Hours: Quiet hours for Waikoloa Beach Villas are 10:00pm to 8:00am.
Garage & Beach Gear
You’ll find beach chairs for everyone, beach umbrellas, snorkel gear, body boards, floaties, BOB stroller, beach wagon, coolers and more in the garage. Enter using either the garage code or the provided key (on the same key ring as the pink pool key). Please make sure to lock the garage door after each use as the door tends to swing open due to the breeze. And don’t bring beach towels – we have plenty of those for you in each unit. Air Conditioning: Please do not lower the temperature below 73 degrees as it can cause the A/C unit to seize up and create an inconvenience during your stay. Trust us on this, the weather on the island affects A/C units differently than the mainland!
Garbage/Recycling: Large dumpsters for trash and recycling are located about 100 steps from each unit and are under a covered pavilion along the main entry road. Currently, there isn’t mixed recycling on the island for non-hotel locations (big bummer!) so unfortunately you’ll need to throw away your bottles/cans with the normal trash.
Lanais: Enjoy outside living on the lanai. The only request of the complex is to not hang items to dry on the lanais (i.e. towels, bathing suits, etc.) without your presence. There are often strong breezes throughout the property and items have been blown away and strewn across the entire complex. For this reason, the property management does not allow items to hang on the lanais and will serve a fine to you. Please use the in-unit washer/dryer for this purpose.
Grills: Most of our units have a grill on the lanai. If one is not present, there are public grills next to each pool (first come first served). Grill utensils will be either in the cabinets by the grill or inside in the utensil drawer. Being close to the water, some of the electric starters have corroded. In the case you experience this, we have provided long lighters so you can light the grill manually. Please clean the grill after each use – wire scrubbers are located in the cabinets by the grill.
Smoking: Waikoloa Beach Villas in its entirety is a smoke-free area. Please do not smoke in/around our unit, near the pool and anywhere on the Waikoloa Beach Villas property. This includes, but is not limited to: cigars, cigarettes, marijuana, vaping. Fines will be assessed for smoking on property.
Babysitting / Child Care
If you are in need of child chare while enjoying the island, Malihini Keiki Care Babysitting and Nanny Service is just a call/email away. 808-331-2909 or mkcare@mkcare.com. We’ve used them many times and can confidently recommend.
Mid-Stay Cleaning
If you would like house cleaning mid-stay, this can be arranged directly by contacting our on-site contact at a charge of $50/hour and can be customized to your preferences (i.e. clean the bathrooms but don’t touch the bedrooms). Contact Karlynne Ferreira to coordinate.
Safe: A safe is located in the closet of the Master Bedroom. Store valuables during your trip by creating your own unique four digit code. Instructions for use are located on the safe and is the same as a hotel safe (i.e. create a unique code each time you open/close). If you forget your code and/or lock yourself out of the safe, it will be a $60 charge to unlock.
Tools: In the case you need a screwdriver, light bulbs, batteries or other tools, those are located in the tool box located in the lanai cabinets. Please call our on-site contact (Zach Ferreira) for anything more than changing batteries or a light bulb.
Doorbell: In transparency, the doorbell at the unit is a Ring doorbell and is linked to the cell phone of the owner. In the case that you get locked out or have other urgent needs, this is a great way to get the owners’ attention and help (you may need to ring the doorbell a few times as the camera is not actively monitored).

Where’s the grocery stores?
First, Instacart services the Big Island and is a convenient way to get groceries delivered (often within a few hours from key stores like Target and Costco). Download the app and have your groceries delivered to the unit’s doorstep upon your arrival.
The Queens’ Marketplaces is across the street and has a full service grocery store named Island Gourmet. Island Gourmet has everything you need to include great produce, pantry items, snacks, sushi/deli counters, fantastic wine selection, health/beauty and sundry items. Their hours are 7am-9pm so, upon arrival, consider walking across the street to the grocery store and picking up grab-n-go sandwiches/salads/deli/poke as you’ll likely be hungry from your travels.
While the Queens’ Marketplace has a fantastic grocery store with all items you’ll need, the KTA is a local grocery store in Waikoloa Village (10 minute drive) and is comparable to traditional grocery stores in both items and prices.
Target, Safeway, Costco, and Walmart are all in the shopping areas of Kona (25 minutes south). Target has a “drive-up and go” curbside pickup when you order online and is a great way to quickly get some groceries.
What’s Walkable?

Shopping Centers: As mentioned previously, the Queens’ and Kings’ Marketplaces are across the street and have fantastic restaurants, shopping, a cinema and a grocery store. We enjoy coffee & acai bowls from Island Vintage Coffee, appetizers from Lava Lava Beach Club, the burger from the Rum Shack, chocolate souffle from Roy’s and to-go cocktails from A-Bay’s Island Grill – you’ll find your favorites as you explore!

Pools on Property: There are two pools & hot tubs on property – one on each end of the complex and are heated year-round. Read the pool rules located on the pool entry gate. Pool noodles are ok but large floaties are not. And, unfortunately, no ball throwing. Use the pink pool key to access the pools (same key for both pools).
No glass of any kind is allowed at the pool.
Hilton Pass: We are excited to offer our guests free Hilton day passes for the group staying with us! This benefit gives you access to all the amenities of the gorgeous Hilton property which is a three minute drive (20 minute walk) from our unit. Visit their two pool areas with water slides, the man-made lagoon that has lots of turtles, fish and even a monk seal (seasonally). Pickleball and tennis are available for an additional charge – and if you forgot your rackets, you can rent them from the Hilton. Contact Matt for the specific date(s) you want to visit the Hilton and you will be sent a day pass for the date request (based on availability, first come first served). Please give 24 hours advanced notice to allow the passes be sent to you via email.

Anaeho’omalu Bay Beach (A-Bay Beach for short) is a quick 12-minute walk, or a short 2-minute drive. It’s a fantastic beach that has both sun and shade, boat excursions (like a glass bottom boat tour), and a breakwater to keep the waves calm. When you arrive, if you walk to the left side of the beach (past the famous Lava Lava Beach Club restaurant and to the rockier section of the beach) there are usually sea turtles resting on the beach in the early evening time. It is generally a calm beach and beautiful place to watch the sunset. The right side of the beach has a beautiful sand beach (pictured) – perfect to relax in the sun. There are beach chairs and other beach items in the garage for you to use at your leisure.
Beaches
Looking for more sandy beaches? While not a complete list, the following are a few of our favorites and are all within 15 minutes of our unit. As a reminder all beaches are public. Although some of the beaches may require you to stop at a guard gate, just tell them “I’m going to the beach” and they will let you through any “restricted access” points.

Hapuna Beach (pictured above) is the largest of the island’s white sand beaches and has been consistently been rated on international Top Ten lists of the islands’ best beaches. Hapuna also offers consistently good conditions for swimming, bodyboarding and sunbathing. During the early part of the year, it’s possible to spot migrating whales in the distance. This beach does have public restrooms and if you walk to the north part of the beach, you can order food & drinks at the Westin hotel’s pool restaurant. Hapuna Beach is located around 10 minutes north of the unit.

Mauna Kea Beach is located at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and stretches for about half a mile with generally calm waters. There are public restrooms at this beach. There are also two small coral reefs on the sides of the beach which offer fantastic snorkeling (hint: there is usually an octopus if you snorkel around the corner on the northern end). It’s great for sunbathing with its white soft sand that slopes gently into the water and the palm trees along the fringe to provide shade. Conveniently, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has an outdoor dining room (Hau Tree) which serves appetizers and drinks to be eaten beachside. There are only 40 parking spaces available, so go early to this beach on the weekends (i.e. you’ll need to arrive between 7am-8am to get a spot) and stay all day. Mauna Kea Beach is located around 15 minutes north of the unit.

Spencer Beach is located 20 minutes north and is considered a local beach. We like it for the calm waters, shade trees, nice sand and snorkeling area. There is plenty parking, showers and restrooms and is far enough north that tourists aren’t likely to venture to it – keeping this a hidden treasure. Within 2 minutes drive of the beach are a few beachy restaurants to include an ice cream shop with Hawaiian Ice, milkshakes or other hard ice cream flavors.

Probably our favorite beach is Kikaua Point Park and is a hidden gem. This beach has something for everyone with its soft sand, uncrowded areas, shade trees, showers/restrooms and has a lot of tide pools and lava rock to go exploring. The water is extremely calm as it’s protected by a natural breakwater, but just outside of this area there are typically surfers (good ones, not newbies!) carving on some 10’ waves. Another reason to love this beach is that you’ll find turtles sun bathing in between tides – we’ve seen as many as 14 before! But please take your pictures from a safe distance, and do not touch, as turtles are protected by the State of Hawai’i. This beach is fantastic for the little ones as the water inside the breakwater has hardly any waves and is extremely shallow…it’s basically a big pool!
Excursion Ideas
Shaka App – Download the Shaka App to your phone (search for “Big Island Hawaii Driving Tour” in the App store). Also check it out at this website http://www.shakaguide.com. It’s a fantastic app that helps plan your road trips around the island.
Kilauea Volcano – The active volcano on the Big Island is a must see. After a 2 year hiatus, the volcano began erupting again in December 2020. The volcano is located on the east side of the island and is around a 2 hour drive from our unit. You’ll need to purchase an entry pass (waived for military or if you have a National Park pass). Be sure to visit Rainbow Falls and the city of Hilo while you’re on that side of the island. Note: if you take Saddle Road (the road cutting through the middle of the island) be aware of the steep grade. Please drive at/below the speed limit as a full vehicle needs extra time to brake due to the grade of the road.
Manta Rays – One of the amazing attractions of Hawaii is the access to underwater wildlife. A must-experience is a nighttime manta ray adventure. While floating in the water holding onto a raft with powerful lights, up to a dozen manta rays will feed underneath you as they are drawn to the spotlighted plankton. Interestingly, these manta rays will perform a backflip while feeding – one of the few places in the world where this happens. We recommend http://www.sunlightonwater.com as your charter tour.
Mahukona Beach Park – A perfect place for snorkeling. An old railroad depot and offloading area for sugarcane ships, this “park” is a hidden gem. There’s no sand here, but in our opinion, that’s perfect for this activity. Park next to the water on the concrete wharf and walk down the 4 step ladder into a shallow and calm area currently used by locals as a swimming hole. Just under the water you’ll see hundreds, maybe even thousands of fish. Our kids learned to snorkel here since the water is protected and calm. And since there’s no sand, that means you’ll be “clean” when you exit the water!
Coffee Farms – there are approximately 650 coffee farms on the island, each growing the famous Kona coffee bean. These are predominantly located south of Kailua Kona in the Captain Cook area which is roughly 60-75 minutes away. Each farm has their own story, so our suggestion is to research 1-2 farms and call to reserve your tour and coffee tasting. Greenwell Farms is a popular location with a guided tour. For a non-traditional experience, check out Rooster Farms who gives tastings out of a 100 year old home and is known for their unique composting methods. On your way back home, consider stopping for gelato at Gypsea Gelato http://www.gypseagelato.com – you won’t regret it!
The closest coffee farm is Mountain Thunder which is around 40 minutes away. They have a nice talking tour explaining the coffee production process and also a paid self-guided walking tour around their plantation. If you visit Mountain Thunder, go 2 minutes out of the way to visit the Rainbow Eucalyptus trees. These gorgeous trees have neon streaked trunks. Plug in 73-1980 Kaloko Drive and keep your eyes peeled on the left side of the road (a grove is located near the #59 marker).

Green and Black sand beaches – On the southern part of the island are both green and black sand beaches and also the ‘southernmost point in the US’. Punalu’u Beach (black) and Mahana Beach (green) are the most popular ones. Don’t worry, it’s just like regular sand, but the color is definitely unique and worth the 2 hour drive. If visiting the green sand beach, bring $20 per person to pay for your 2 mile drive from the parking lot to the beach. Trust us, it’s well worth the money and the experience during the truck ride is something to tell your friends! Note: do NOT take any rental vehicles (to include ours) all the way to the beach. Park in the parking lot and then use the truck service or walk. The 2 mile drive between the parking lot and the beach is one of the roads that are disallowed by the rental car companies (and also disallowed for our vehicles). You’ll likely be hungry after this adventure so consider continuing 15 minutes east to the town of Punalu’u. This is the southernmost town in the U.S. and has a spectacular bakery which serves sandwiches, but more importantly delicious malasadas!
Don’t want to make a 2 hour drive? Check out 49 Black Sands beach which is about 10 minutes north of our unit in the Mauna Lani complex. While not the most popular of the black/green sand beaches, you’ll still get some great pictures to show off to your friends back home!
SCUBA – Are you divers? Or want to try? Being towards the north end of the island is perfect because you’ll avoid most of the other tourists and the dive sites tend to be more healthy. We often see dolphins and humpback whales on the boat rides to the dive sites. Kohala Divers (www.kohaladivers.com) is our preferred dive charter (20 minutes north in Kohala) and they are conscious and respectful of the local wildlife. If diving in Kona, we like to use Honu Divers (www.konahonudivers.com) as they have a very experienced crew.

Pu’uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park – This park is an important Hawaiian ceremonial site bounded on its southern and eastern sides by a massive L-shaped wall, known as the Pā Puʻuhonua (Great Wall), and on its northern and western sides by the ocean. In addition to the Great Wall, within the Puʻuhonua are several other important ceremonial structures including the Hale o Keawe, ʻĀleʻaleʻa Heiau, and the Ancient Heiau. This site is the most well-preserved on the islands, is south of Kona (just over an hour south of Waikoloa) and is a great spot to detour if you head to the southern tip of the island on your way to the green sand beach.
Spend a day in Honoka’a. Located around an hour from the unit, Honoka’a is a fun little town with a cute main street that has lots of local shops. Savor a free chocolate tasting at the Honoka’a Chocolate Company and then have a sandwich at one of the many hideaway shops (dessert first!). Consider visiting the only vanilla farm in the U.S. at Hawaii Vanilla Company (www.hawaiinvanilla.com). We recommend booking one of their food experiences in addition to the tour. Your eyes will be opened at new ways to cook with vanilla! Lastly before you head home, travel north to the Waipio Valley lookout. It’s a gorgeous setting overlooking the valley which has so much history in the Hawaiian culture. Note: only locals can travel down to the valley floor, so please enjoy the views from the lookout only.
Salt Farm – Have you ever thought about where salt comes from? Visit Kona Sea Salt and hear about how they process salt from 2,200 feet below the ocean surface. For tours, book through their website http://www.konaseasalt.com.
Foodie Ideas
On the Water

Lava Lava Beach Club: The only restaurant on A-Bay beach, LLBC is a perfect place to watch a sunset. They have beachside seating, an open-air bar area and lawn games to play while waiting for your table. They do not take reservations, so our recommendation is to arrive between 4:00-4:30pm to grab a table for dinner and the sunset. If you arrive any later than that, chances are you’ll be waiting quite a long time for a table. Nightly music starts at 5pm.
Canoehouse: Located in the Mauna Lani complex, Canoehouse has a spectacular sunset setting while indulging in one of the best culinary experiences the island has to offer. Canoehouse has an on/off relationship with a tasting menu so if they offer it, we highly recommend. It’s not a cheap endeavor but is a great spot for an anniversary, birthday or special occasion.
Brown’s: Head north to the Fairmont Hotel and dine while elevated a few feet above the beach. Yes, you’ll see a sunset here but the reason we recommend is twofold: 1) try their warm ube rolls with honey butter, you’ll eat the whole basket and it’s ok to ask for more!; 2) they have a app/entree/dessert option for $99 – one of the more reasonable dining options for a white tablecloth dinner.
Meridia: Looking for paella? Head to Meridia which is the restaurant at the Westin hotel. Their Mediterranean inspired menu is amazing and the setting atop the hill overlooks the ocean for spectacular sunset views. Can’t recommend the paella enough!
Huggo’s On The Rocks: A sister restaurant to LLBC, this fun spot on the beach is a great spot to enjoy happy hour drinks after a day spent near Kona. You’ll notice parking in scarce in Kona, but there are two free parking lots near this restaurant that take the mystery out of deciding where to park.
Notable Restaurants
Rum Shack: Located directly across the street from our units, here’s a great tip about the restaurant. If you show your boarding pass within 24 hours of arrival, you can purchase a delicious mai tai for $1.00! Plus, they are a distillery so enjoy the rum tasting flight at some point during your trip.
Roy’s: Roy’s is known as a high end Hawaiian restaurant and for good reason – it’s fantastic. Here on the Big Island, Roy’s is conveniently located in the Kings’ Marketplace which is a short 5 minute walk away. Order what you want, it’s all delicious, but we recommend their prix fixe (called the “mixed grill”) which has a short rib, carrots, shrimp, scalloped potatoes and the best molten chocolate lava cake you’ll ever have!
Mauka Grille: Co-located at the clubhouse at the Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf Course, we suggest walking over to Mai Grille (cut through the golf course for a shortcut) for brunch. Their cheap mimosas are a great way to start the morning and, if you haven’t tried the local dish Loco Moco, this is a good place to try it – seasoned hamburger patty with eggs cooked your style over a bed of rice and a magical brown gravy. You’ll definitely need a nap afterwards but it’s well worth it.

Merriman’s: Peter Merriman was one of the first ‘farm to table’ restauranteurs in the world. His passion for local cuisine has spanned the decades and his eponymous restaurant located 25 minutes from Waikoloa in neighboring Waimea is an island staple. Pictured above is their famous chocolate purse! We recommend making reservations for their Sunday brunch.
Umekes: Located in Kona, Umekes is a fantastic place for poke, sushi, sashimi and other fresh catch dishes. If it’s your first time, we recommend one of their platters which has a sampling of many of their menu items. It’ll also feed 3-4 people, so it’s the best “bang for your buck”.

Coffee Shack: On your way to the Green Sand Beach, stop for breakfast at the Coffee Shack which is south of Kona in Captain Cook. Anything on the savory menu is superb and if you’re looking for something sweet definitely get the huge cinnamon roll.
Shaka Tacoz: We’ve all had our fair share of tacos in our lives but Shaka Tacoz is really really yummy. They have two locations on the island and is worth the stop if you need a snack (or more!). Their salsas are amazing and they have all spice levels (to include a mango which is a must try). Hint: ask for the crispy cheese add-on.
Hilo Bay Cafe: If you find yourself in Hilo and looking for a upscale dinner, check out Hilo Bay Cafe. An elevated restaurant overlooking the harbor, this restaurant just has really good food period. It’s kind of like Merriman’s in the sense they honor the local farmers and cuisine, they could be a fancy white table cloth restaurant but aren’t, and they have a very chill environment that can be date night or a casual dinner.
Pineapples: the quintessential touristy Hawaiian restaurant, located in Hilo, this packed establishment offers delicious food and also is one of the few restaurants where you can order your adult beverage in a cored out pineapple. We recommend making a reservation since this place get fill up quickly.
Around the Island
Luau – You can spend a lifetime researching the best luau so let us help with the decision. First, all the luau’s have essentially the same show so it’s a matter of the food, experience and price. Mauna Kea’s luau has the best food, is in the middle for price and has a great intimate setting. The Hilton is the most expensive, is designed for tourists and the food is just ok. The Marriott is the cheapest is walkable from the unit, is the same level as the beach but the beach is hidden behind a wall and the food is above average. And then there are a few down south in Kona with varying degrees of quality. Wherever you end up, you’ll enjoy this traditional Hawaiian experience.
Kona Cold Lobsters: Located just south of the airport. This seafood distribution center services many of the islands seafood stores and also has their own retail store. Visit http://www.konacoldlobsters.com for more information and to preorder. We recommend purchasing a few lobster tails and some oysters to have a decadent night.

Malasadas: If you haven’t had Hawaiian malasadas, you’ll be in for a treat. It’s a donut, but it’s so much more. Filled with a cream and/or topped with cinnamon/sugar, these tasty treats are a must have while on island. A fun place to get them is from a blue food truck located 10 minutes north on your way to Hapuna Beach (at the road leading to Puako). It’ll be on the west side of the road near the Hapuna Beach road and is called the Hot Malasadas Truck. The closest can be found at the Rum Shack which is across the street from the unit has fantastic malasadas, albeit a different style which is on the lighter and airy side and has delicious dipping sauces. Two other locations that compete for the top malasada spot are the Punalu’u Bakery and Tex’s Malasads in Honoka’a. We can’t wait to hear which you think are the best!
Farmer’s Markets: About 30 minutes to the northeast is the town of Waimea. A fun excursion is to visit the local Farmer’s Markets…actually all 4 of them! They are hosted on either Wednesday or Saturday and are home to fantastic local cuisine, arts & crafts, live music and will give you a taste of what island life is truly like. Check out http://www.lovebigisland.com/waimea-farmers-market for times and locations.
There is also a farmer’s market at the Kings’ Marketplace on Tuesdays if you don’t want to make the drive to Waimea. Kona has a few markets which are on varying days. Lastly, if you head to Hilo to visit the volcano, their Farmer’s Market is on Wednesdays and is located in the beachy downtown corridor.
Food Truck Friday: Nearly every Friday from 4ish-7:30ish there are 15-20 food trucks parked at the Target parking lot. Enjoy everything from empanadas, ribs, vegetarian, pizza, sweet treats and more. There is no website for this event, but there are Facebook and Instagram pages to follow (Food Truck Friday Kona).
Breweries/Winery: There is some great beer on the island. The most famous being Kona Brewing which is located across the street from the Kona Hilton. Stop there for pizza and a beer in their open air space. Our favorite brewery is named Big Island Brewhaus is located in Waimea (same location as the Farmer’s Markets). They have fantastic staple beers like a pilsner and IPA, but are known for creating unique beers, like a bourbon/chardonnay barrel aged beer, which are typically a hit. Buy a 22oz bomber or fill a growler to take home. There is 1 winery on the island and is aptly named Volcano Winery for both its close proximity to the volcano and because some of their grapes are grown on island. While visiting the volcano, consider a quick detour to visit the winery (5 minutes from the volcano) before entering the National Park.
Hiking
Makaula-‘O’oma Trail (1-2 hours) – easy/moderate, Makaula-‘O’oma Trail, Hawaii, Hawaii – 2,772 Reviews, Map | AllTrails
This is a moderate 4 mile loop trail near Kailua Kona, Hawaii. Since you are in Hawaii and it is hot a trail may be just what you are looking for. We recommend you start this hike in the morning to avoid getting too hot! This trail is mostly flat, but there are some uphill areas. We recommend you bring water. You are basically walking through a tropical forest. If you are looking to see a tropical forest, take a break from the sun, see native plants and fruits – this is a great loop for you!
Poluluu Valley Trail (30 minutes) – short, but difficult, Pololū Trail, Hawaii, Hawaii – 2,681 Reviews, Map | AllTrails
Located at the end of Highway 270 you can travel to this hike or just observe the lookout. The hike requires good shoes and water. There are also no bathrooms. This hike is short (0.9 mile round trip), but the views are amazing and you will be rewarded with a black sand beach. It is truly remarkable.
Pro Tip: On the way back, you will see a Farm to Fresh Restaurant selling fresh fruit, foods, smoothies and desserts. Grab a snack, lunch or dinner!
Lava Tube located at – Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park (U.S. National Park Service)
Don’t leave Hawaii without walking through a lava tube. It is just way too cool to miss! The trail is flat and well lit. You can either drive to the lava tube and walk through the lava tube only (15 minutes) or you can park and take the trail along the crater floor to a lava tube (about 1 hour total). Note: while the crater floor is flat, the trail leading down can be steep. Wear good shoes on this trail. The trail also provides a beautiful view of the jungle and is a great opportunity to view lookout points of the volcano.
Pro-Tip: Bring a poncho or rain jacket. The weather can be hit or miss. You also might want to consider traveling to the Volcano National Park for a full or half-day trip. There is a lot to see, multiple lookout points and multiple trails.
Golf
Bring your clubs? There are fantastic golf courses on the island and most of them are within 20 minutes of our units. Some of our units have golf clubs in the garage – feel free to use them!
Pro Tip: Use the http://www.golfnow.com website to receive discounted tee times for a lot of the beachside courses.
Mauna Lani: Arguably the nicest course that is not a private club. Drive 10 minutes north to the clubhouse and play some challenging holes right next to the water. https://aubergeresorts.com/maunalani/experiences/golf/
Mauna Kea: This usually is our top pick for courses due to their maintenance and proximity to the water. https://www.maunakearesort.com/golf/course-overview
Waikoloa Beach Resort: Our units are on this golf course. They have three 9-hole courses so play two of them to reach your 18 holes. We recommend the Beaches course for the holes along the water, the Lakes course if you want to pass by your unit (it’s hole 3) or the Kings course if you want a wider course with more trees (and it’s a little cooler and less windy). Tell the front desk you are staying at Waikoloa Beach Villas to receive a discounted rate. https://www.waikoloabeachresort.com/big-island-hawaii-golf/
Makani: A fun public course that is inland is the Makani Golf Course. This course will provide a different flora & fauna experience, you’ll likely see local wildlife like turkeys and goats and has a challenging island hole that may see a couple of balls drop into the water. This course is around 40 minutes away from the units and is ‘in the hill’ to the south east. https://www.makanigolfclub.com/

Sunscreen
Hawaii is the first State to ban sunscreen ingredients Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. This law took effect January 1, 2021. The intent is to eliminate coral bleaching, which causes the reef to die and destroys the habitat for the underwater wildlife. Chances are the sunscreen you purchased on the mainland is now banned in Hawaii. Learn more at this website: http://www.hawaii.com/blog/reef-safe-sunscreen
Packages can be received at the unit and are delivered outside the entry door. Packages are your responsibility. Be aware that while Amazon does deliver most things to Hawaii, it can take up to 2 weeks for delivery for some items. Further, Amazon packages typically ships via USPS and sometime are not delivered directly to the unit but at the post office in Waikoloa Village (about 15 minutes away). Packages that do not arrive during your stay (i.e. arrive late) will not be shipped to your home address. There will be a $60 delivery fee assessed for packages requiring our team to deliver and/or accessing the mail box.
